Payroll/HR Specialist

Reporting Relationship:

Director of Human Resources 

Position Overview:

Under general supervision, the Payroll/HR Specialist is responsible for the processes related to the payroll function including oversight of electronic time entry, payroll processing, government reporting, and compliance with all regulatory standards and university policies and procedures. The position also provides general support in the areas of compensation, benefits administration, and employee data maintenance.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Payroll Administration:
    • Serves as a liaison between employees and third-party payroll provider
    • Sets up new employees in system and resets passwords as needed
    • Trains employees and supervisors in the use of the electronic time entry system
    • Processes bi-weekly and monthly payroll, reviewing electronic time entry to ensure accuracy of information and required signatures are obtained
    • Updates and maintains payroll files and software to reflect personnel payroll changes
    • Ensures all tax deposits, quarterly tax returns, and governmental reporting is completed in an accurate and timely manner
    • Researches payroll issues/discrepancies, and processes necessary corrections
  • Compensation Administration:
    • Ensures compliance with FLSA, federal, state and local compensation laws and regulations
    • Participates in salary surveys, conducts equity analysis, and other statistical analysis as needed
  • Benefits Administration:
    • Serves as a point of contact to resolve benefit issues (enrollment, eligibility, benefit deductions, etc.)

General Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with and supports the work of the HR staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Associate’s degree with 5 years of payroll experience, or equivalent work experience required. Bachelor’s degree, Certified Payroll Professional certification, ADP software experience, and experience working in a higher education setting is highly preferred. Strong analytical ability, customer service focused, ability to meet deadlines, and highly organized. General understanding of human resources, compensation management, and benefits administration needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • ADP Payroll, Time & Attendance, HR & Benefits software
  • Microsoft Office software
  • Strong analytical ability
  • General knowledge of principles and practices of human resources management
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team
